PGA Tour - Valero Texas Open

Akshay Bhatia nearly celebrated too soon Sunday, hurting his left shoulder while pumping his arms on a 12-foot birdie to force a playoff. He recovered to make birdie on the first extra hole and win the Valero Texas Open over hard-luck Denny McCarthy to earn a trip to the Masters.

It was a wild finish on so many levels.

McCarthy was six shots behind going to the back nine at the TPC San Antonio when he birdied eight of the nine holes – including the last seven – making a 12-foot birdie for a 9-under 63. Bhatia had to make his birdie putt from the same range to have a chance.

He made it for a 67, raising his arms to shake them in his clutch moment. And that's when he felt his shoulder – which he says has given him trouble before – pop out of its socket.

Bhatia hit his tee shot and laid up with a 5-iron on the par-5 18th in the playoff.

McCarthy, playing in his 174th PGA TOUR event without winning, was first to play and chunked a wedge so badly that he immediately hung his head. The ball came up some 20 yards short into the middle of a creek.

And then Bhatia called for treatment, jogging off the course briefly to get his shoulder taped. He returned and hit a wedge to 6 feet. Needing three putts to win, he holed it to win for the second time on the PGA TOUR.

“Man, what a crazy, crazy day,” Bhatia said.  The 22-year-old Bhatia, who turned pro five years ago, won at the Barracuda Championship last summer. It was held as an Additional Event during The Open Championship, so it did not get him into the Masters.

This one did, his first trip to Augusta National. And it came 10 years after Bhatia played in the Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals at the home of the Masters. Now he gets to play on more than just the 18th green, and he fulfilled his mother's wish.

“This is awesome,” he said. “It's hard to win out there as it showed today. My mom's birthday was April 1 and her wish was to go to the Masters.”

Professional Golf Tour of India - Nissan presents Chandigarh Open 2024 hosted by Chandigarh Golf Club

Indian star Gaganjeet Bhullar lived up to his billing of being one of the pre-tournament favourites as he outshined all his rivals in the final round to lift the trophy at the INR 1 crore Nissan presents Chandigarh Open 2024 hosted by Chandigarh Golf Club.

Bhullar (67-67-65-68), a 12-time international winner who was playing at his home course this week, bagged his 25th career title and 13th win on the PGTI after posting a gritty last round of four-under 68 to ease to a comfortable four-shot victory with a week’s tally of 21-under 267 which also happened to be the lowest winning total at the Chandigarh Golf Club.

Gaganjeet’s third win at the Chandigarh Golf Club saw him eclipse the previous best 72-hole total at the venue which was 20-under 268 achieved by Ajeetesh Sandhu and Rashid Khan at the Jeev Milkha Singh Invitational 2019. Ajeetesh went on to win that event in a playoff.

Angad Cheema (66-67-66-72), another Chandigarh-based pro who was the overnight joint leader along with Bhullar, shot a 72 in round four to finish runner-up at a total of 17-under 271.

Gaganjeet Bhullar’s ball-striking was on point once again as he found all fairways except one in the final round. His hitting coupled with his good wedge shots and one long conversion on the 15th earned him seven birdies on Saturday at the expense of three bogeys. The 35-year-old Gaganjeet, a winner on the DP World Tour, established a three-shot lead by the 11th hole and never looked back thereafter.

Korn Ferry Tour - Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club

Steven Fisk is Georgia through and through. He was born in Atlanta and grew up on a par-3 course and driving range his father built (and still operates) in his childhood hometown of Stockbridge. He played college golf for Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, a little under 200 miles from home. He and his wife, Edith, wed last month in Augusta. And Sunday evening in Savannah, roughly an hour drive from Georgia Southern, the 26-year-old Fisk earned his first Korn Ferry Tour win.

Fisk birdied three of the final four holes of regulation and defeated Rob Oppenheim in a sudden-death playoff, capturing the 2024 Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club with a two-putt par on the Deer Creek Course’s par-5 18th hole.

Fisk began the final round one stroke off the lead but trailed Oppenheim by three strokes with four holes to play. Back-to-back birdies at the par-4 15th and 16th, followed by a clutch par save at the par-3 17th, opened the door for a tying birdie at No. 18. Fisk came within inches of a hole-out eagle from the greenside bunker, but tapped in for a bogey-free 4-under 68 and matched Oppenheim at 14-under 274.

For the fourth consecutive event, the winner would be determined via a playoff, tying the Korn Ferry Tour record for consecutive events with a playoff. The previous instances occurred in 2004 and 2019.

In the playoff, Fisk found the right side of the fairway, while Oppenheim drove it into a fairway bunker up the same side. Both had chip shots from behind the green, with Fisk’s rolling out to roughly 12 feet. After Fisk’s two-putt par, Oppenheim had a 7-footer for par which would have extended the playoff. It grazed the left edge of the cup but never fell, sealing the win for Fisk.

“Such a long day that somehow went by really fast at the same time,” Fisk said. “To get my first win right here in Savannah, so close to where I went to school, is kind of crazy. I haven’t had much success here in the past, but to get it done today is extra special to be this close to what’s kind of my adopted home.”

Sunshine Tour - Limpopo Championship

Deon Germishuys claimed his second Sunshine Tour title when he won the Limpopo Championship by two strokes at the Euphoria Golf and Lifestyle Estate on Sunday. Germishuys signed for a final round of 66 to win on 22 under par and add to his victory in the 2022 Sishen Classic.

Jacques Blaauw, who led by one stroke over Germishuys going into the final round, finished second on 20 under par with a closing 69. Jacques Kruyswijk (66) and Dylan Mostert (66) shared third place on 17 under par.

“I don’t know where to start,” said a relieved Germishuys. “Jacques played great golf for the first three days and even today in the final round.”

Blaauw started well with a birdie at the first while Germishuys made a bogey as early as the second hole. But as the putts dried up for Blaauw thereafter, Germishuys found his form on the greens. He birdied the third and then made his charge with four straight birdies from the sixth hole.

“I thought I had Jacques after nine holes after I made four birdies in a row, but he just didn’t back off,” said Germishuys. Blaauw made four birdies on the back nine, but also two bogeys. Kruyswijk came with his own charge of five birdies in six holes from the ninth. But Germishuys made two birdies of his own on the back nine that proved enough to secure him the victory.

Gira de Golf Professional Mexicana - Villa Rica Classic

For the second consecutive time, the Canadian Sebastian Szirmak was proclaimed champion of the Mexican Professional Golf Tour (GGPM) on this occasion when the third edition of the Villa Rica Classic was awarded, tournament that distributed a bag of one million 800 thousand pesos and Official World Golf Ranking points (OWGR).

The winner demonstrated the good moment he is going through, defeating American Josh Radcliff as the leader for the last round in the second tiebreaker. Both players finished with a score of 200 strokes, 16 under par, followed by the Argentine Mauro Báez with 201, -15.

“It is an honor for me to take this trophy this week. I really didn't think much about my approach on the last hole of the playoff, I asked my caddy, and he said it was a good shot, Fortunately the victory putt fell, I can't wait to celebrate with my girlfriend”, added Szirmak, champion just a week ago of the Wipa's Open in Cuernavaca.

“Without a doubt the Mexican tour is a great tour, there is a very good level, it is my third season here and it is an honor to come to this country where they treat me wonderfully. Now I have to focus on the last stage next month”, added the 34-year-old from Toronto, Canada.
