World Golf Championship - WGC - Dell Technologies Match Play

Sam Burns came into the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play without much fanfare but now he is back in the Top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Burns has had the same coach, Brad Pullin, for years, and lives a quiet life with his wife, Caroline, in tiny Choudrant, Louisiana, where they moved into a new house late last year. He was not featured in the Netflix docuseries “Full Swing” and won’t be in the second season, either. In a sense, then, he was right in his element, even if he’d never played here before.

Amid the usual chaos of the WGC-Dell Match Play, Burns was the picture of tranquillity and deadeye putting as he beat Cameron Young, 6 and 5, for the title at Austin Country Club on Sunday. The champion hugged Caroline on the 13th green as his beaming parents, Todd and Beth, looked on before an armada of party barges on Lake Austin.

“I feel like I gained a little bit more confidence as each match went on,” Burns said.

Rory McIlroy beat Scottie Scheffler, 2 and 1, in the consolation match.

Five of the top six seeds made the knockout rounds, one reason why no one was paying much attention to Burns. So sleepy was his season that finishing sixth at the Valspar Championship, which he’d won twice, counted as a highlight. He cited a driver change – his old one was deemed non-conforming – and his work with coach Pullin for his turnaround.

Playing for a newly designed trophy here, he fell behind early in the championship match when Young birdied the second hole. But Burns found another gear, making eight birdies in a stretch of 10 holes to close out the victory.

“There might not have been anyone beating him today,” said Young, last year’s PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year, who notched his sixth runner-up finish and is still looking for his first win.

Added Burns, “I've been kind of fighting my golf swing a little bit at the start of this four-week stretch that I've been on. I put a lot of hard work in with my coach, Brad Pullin, and I'm just so thankful for him and the amount of work that he's put in with me and been there by my side for all of it. There are so many people that have helped me along the way.”

PGA Tour - Corales Puntacana Championship

Matt Wallace of England was hugging his caddie again Sunday, not to make good from an argument but to celebrate his first PGA Tour title at the Corales Puntacana Championship. Wallace ran off four straight birdies down the stretch on the Corales course at Puntacana and closed with two solid pars for a 6-under 66.

He was on the putting green when Nicolai Hojgaard, the 22-year-old from Denmark playing on a sponsor exemption, had a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th that would have forced a playoff. The putt just missed on the low side, giving the Dane a 68. Wallace, already a four-time winner on the DP World Tour, finished at 19-under 269 in winning in his 80th career start on the PGA TOUR.

His iron play and putting was pivotal, such as the downhill 8-foot birdie putt breaking to the right on the 15th hole that gave him his first lead. Equally important was his attitude. Wallace can run on the hot side and often berates himself.

“Self-talk was very good today,” he said. “I realized at THE PLAYERS Championship that out of the 145 shots I hit to miss the cut by one, two of those I spoke to myself nicely. That's not going to get the job done.”

DP World Tour & Sunshine Tour - Jonsson Workwear Open

Germany’s Nick Bachem claimed a dream debut victory on the DP World Tour when he won the Jonsson Workwear Open, co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour, by four shots at The Club at Steyn City on Sunday. Moving into the Top 300 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Bachem closed with a bogey-free final round of 64 to win on 24 under par. South Africans Zander Lombard and Hennie du Plessis shared second place on 20 under par with their respective final rounds of 65 and 68. Bachem’s rise has been incredible from only recently playing on the Euro Pro Tour and then European Challenge Tour, to now being crowned a champion on the DP World Tour.

“It feels amazing. I think it’s my 10th start on the DP World Tour. I always believed I could win out here. But to be honest, just playing on the DP World Tour has been overwhelming, and now to win on it as well is amazing. I actually can’t process what’s happened to me over the last few years.”

Bachem overcame a challenging start to his final round when his drive off the first was plugged in a fairway bunker. He managed to make an incredible par from there and went on to play flawless golf.

“I had a bad start with that plugged lie on the first hole and a pitch out. But I changed my mindset during this tournament. I led a tournament in Kenya recently and I tried too hard to win there and it didn’t work out. So, this week I just stuck to the plan and stayed calm. My caddie is also very experienced and kept me in the moment most of the time. I just wanted to enjoy today and enjoy having the chance to win a tournament. I played great and am lucky it was my day.”

Korn Ferry Tour - Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club

The last time David Skinns won on the Korn Ferry Tour, the Englishman earned his first PGA TOUR card as his wife, Kristin, and three sons – Brayden, Bennett, and Colt – watched on television back home in Suwanee, Georgia. This time around, all four of them ran into Skinns’ arms mere moments after he tapped in the winning par putt at the Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club.

Skinns held off fan favourite Shad Tuten and United States Air Force veteran Tom Whitney for his third career Korn Ferry Tour win. A native of Lincoln, England and University of Tennessee alum, Skinns carded a third consecutive 4-under 68 at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club’s Deer Creek course, highlighted by birdies at the par-5 14th and par-3 17th which gave him a two-stroke lead as he strode to the 18th tee.

Skinns’ previous two Korn Ferry Tour victories came at the 2018 and 2021 Pinnacle Bank Championship presented by Aetna in Omaha, Nebraska. The latter was the 43rd and final regular season event of a combined 2020-21 season (a result of the COVID-19 pandemic), which catapulted him to PGA TOUR membership.

In the years since Skinns’ first victory, though, he longed for a special moment with his family on hand. The moment finally arrived Sunday afternoon, and Skinns got quite the bonus: his mother was there, too.

“My wife’s been talking about that for a while,” Skinns said. “She’s been like, ‘Man, it would be great if you could have that moment with us all there.’ We finally got it, and I’m so happy they were here. To get it done here and to have Kristin and the boys be able to come down was a dream come true. That’s the only thing I can say.”

Challenge Tour & Professional Golf Tour of India - Duncan Taylor Black Bull Challenge

Chouhan secures Challenge Tour card for 2023 season, first international win by an Indian in India since 2018

India’s Om Prakash Chouhan produced a nerveless seven-under 65 on the final day to earn his first international title as he finished two shots ahead of the rest of the field much to the delight of the home crowd at the US$300,000 Duncan Taylor Black Bull Challenge 2023 at the Karnataka Golf Association (KGA) golf course in Bengaluru on Sunday.

The 36-year-old Om Prakash Chouhan (70-67-66-65), who hails from Mhow in Madhya Pradesh, fired the last day’s best score to total 20-under 268 for the week while joint runners-up Ashley Chesters (67-68-68-67) of England and Victor Pastor (72-64-67-67) of Spain had a tally of 18-under 270 at the event co-sanctioned by the European Challenge Tour and PGTI.

“I’m thrilled,” he said. “It’s a huge achievement for me as I had never won an international title before.

“Today I just wanted to focus on my strengths and not drop any shots. I had thought that a score of five to six under par would be ideal today but those around me told me to target seven under. I would like to thank them for motivating me as I did manage to end up with a seven under par round.

“I’ve worked a lot on the mental aspect of my game lately. That has brought a lot of improvement in my game. In the past, if I dropped shots or made mistakes early in the round, I would generally start playing more aggressively. But now, I don’t let the errors affect my game too much.

“I followed up a good par on the 14th with a crucial birdie on the 15th that set the tone for my good finishing stretch. The birdie on the 15th was key as it helped me equal the lead. I knew something special was on the cards from there on.”

Chouhan is a seven-time TATA Steel PGTI winner, but he will now look to continue his golfing journey in Europe following his dream breakthrough victory.

Asian Tour - World City Championship presented by Hong Kong Golf Club

Taichi Kho made history today by becoming the first player from Hong Kong to win an Asian Tour event after he recorded a hugely popular and significant victory at the inaugural World City Championship presented by the Hong Kong Golf Club.

Kho, who only turned professional in January, triumphed by two shots from New Zealand’s Michael Hendry on another wet day at the Hong Kong Golf Club to fittingly celebrate the week he was announced as an ambassador for the club and the return of international tournament golf to the Special Administrative Region of China for the first time in 38 months.

Twenty-two-year-old Kho closed with an even-par 70 to finish the tournament, which was reduced to 54 holes because of the inclement weather, on 12 under, and also secure one of the four spots up for grabs in this year’s Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in July.

Hendry shot a 68 while Australian Travis Smyth returned a 66 to finish third, three behind Kho. Korean Bio Kim (65) and Miguel Tabuena (72) from the Philippines tied for fourth, a shot further back.

PGA Tour Latinoamerica - Roberto de Vicenzo Memorial 100 Years

All Leandro Marelli could do is turn around and clap his hands. Marelli, who had been chasing Chandler Blanchet during the entire final round of the Roberto De Vicenzo Memorial 100 Years, watched as Blanchet hit his second-shot approach from 124 yards into the hole for an eagle-2 on his final swing of the day. That eagle at historic Ranelagh Golf Club lifted Blanchet to a thrilling, three-shot win over Marelli.

“Chandler made one of the best golf shots I’ve ever seen in my life. I had no choice but to congratulate him,” Marelli said.

With one hole to play, Blanchet was clinging to a one-stroke advantage, and he watched Marelli smoke his drive, the ball landing 40 yards short of the par-4 green. Blanchet’s ball settled a full 50 yards behind Marelli’s. Knowing Marelli faced a relatively short chip, and with the pressure on, Blanchet nailed his 50-degree-wedge approach shot, saw it hit about two feet behind the cup and slowly roll in.

“I hit a good tee shot, and I was right where I wanted to be. I knew I was going to have somewhere around 120 yards,” Blanchet said of his second-to-last shot of the tournament. “It was a perfect shot. I was in a divot a little bit. It came out a little lower than expected but it obviously worked out well.”

After raising his arms in triumph, Blanchet immediately gave his caddie, Antonio Brazil—“Big Tony”—a high-five and then a hug. It was Brazil who was also on the bag for Blanchet’s first PGA TOUR Latinoamérica title, at the 2019 Sao Paulo Golf Club Championship. In that win, like this one, Blanchet had four rounds in the 60s. This week, Blanchet opened with a 6-under 65, followed that with back-to-back 68s then closed with Sunday’s 66 that seemed somewhat unlikely through nine holes.

ProGolf Tour - Red Sea Egyptian Classic

Guichard started the final day tied with Aydan Verdonk. However, with four birdies in the first seven holes, he quickly made it clear that it would be very difficult for the competition to beat him on this day.

It only became tense for a short time when Verdonk came within two strokes with three birdies between hole seven and eleven in the course of the round. But the Dutchman could not keep up the pace of his opponent in the final sprint. Guichard took advantage of the favourable conditions due to the lower wind and crossed the finish line with a spectacular 65 (-7) after shooting 68 and 70 on the previous days.

At 13 under par, he ended up six strokes ahead of Verdonk, Mike Toorop (Netherlands), Antoine Auboin and Victor Veyret (both France). He will receive a cheque for 5,000 euros for his first title on the Pro Golf Tour.
