PGA Tour -Hero World Challenge

Viktor Hovland hangs on to defend title at Hero World Challenge ending so-so year with a win taking him back into the top ten of the world rankings. Viktor Hovland, who carried a five-shot lead into the back nine Sunday, survived a shaky finish and shot a final-round 69 to edge Scottie Scheffler (68) by two at the Hero World Challenge at Albany.

“It was a lot more stressful than it should have been,” Hovland said.

Both players bogeyed the 18th hole, Hovland rolling in a 20-foot putt after hitting his second in the hazard from an awkward lie on the lip of a bunker. “When you’re standing there with a two-shot lead, that’s like the last thing you can do,” he said.

Scheffler couldn’t capitalize. Needing a birdie, he lost his approach into the waste bunker right of the green and made bogey. After losing the world No. 1 ranking to Rory McIlroy at THE CJ CUP in South Carolina in October, he would have regained it with a win at the Hero, which provides world ranking points but not FedExCup points.

The result was the same as it was a year ago here, with Hovland and Scheffler going 1-2.

Sunshine Tour / DP World Tour -The Investec South African Open Championship

Lawrence moves to the best position he’s held in the Official World Golf Rankings now ranked 64th after his win at the Investec South African Open Championship. It had everything the final round of the 112th Investec South African Open deserved. It took everything from Thriston Lawrence to do what the greats of South African golf have done before him and add his name to one of the most sought after trophies in the game.

With a drama-filled one-stroke victory on 16 under par at Blair Atholl Golf and Country Estate on Sunday, Lawrence turned his boyhood dreams into reality and claimed his third DP World Tour victory in what has been an incredible past 13 months for him.

“Unbelievable. It’s a dream come true for me. This is the one you want to win – your national Open. It was so special to have Gary Player watching as well. He’s won 13 of these, and now I’ve got one as well. It’s what you dream of. This means everything to me. This is by far my best victory ever,” said a relieved Lawrence.

He started the final round with a two-stroke lead and at one point was as much as five shots ahead. But then came a stretch of five dropped shots in five holes on a back nine of 41 for a closing 74 where he was pulled into an almost match play battle with Clément Sordet who tied him for the lead before his bogey on 17.

“During the middle of the round it felt like it was going to be an easy victory for me and then golf happens. You get ups and downs during your round. You get ups and downs during life. And it happened to me today. It felt like everything was falling apart, but I just hung in there. It felt like match play for me. Even with those stumbles I was still ahead and then after 16 I told myself I was all square. I just tried to stick to my own game and stay calm,” said Lawrence.

“To be standing here with the trophy is an unbelievable accomplishment for me. I’m just so grateful. It wasn’t the prettiest finish but a win is a win. I’ll probably wake up tomorrow and still not believe it. This is what you work for. It’s the toughest thing in the world to win, and it’s been an unbelievable start to the new season for me.”

PGA Tour of Australasia / DP World Tour -ISPS Handa Australian Open

The first Polish golfer to win on the DP World Tour when he was victorious at the Irish Open in July, Meronk took just two starts of the new season to register a second. Adrian Meronk took his second DP World Tour title by eagling the last hole winning by five-shots at the ISPS HANDA Australian Open in Melbourne.

The Pole entered the day at Victoria Golf Club a shot behind former World Number One Adam Scott but after a two-shot swing on the first he never looked back, signing for a 66 to finish at 14 under. Scott carded a 72 in front of adoring home crowds to finish a shot ahead of another Australian in Min Woo Lee, who recorded a closing 69.

He was four over after his first 16 holes in Melbourne and looked like he could be in a battle to make the cut after a 73 but followed that up with rounds of 66-63-66 to storm to the top of the leaderboard and take the trophy. The Win also moved Meronk to his best position in the World Golf Rankings as he moved to 52nd in the rankings.

“I’m super excited and to finish like that on the 18th hole is just unreal," he said. “I’m so grateful, thank you for all the support and I enjoyed this week so much.

“I felt really good again today. I kept doing what I’ve done the last two days and it worked pretty well. I’m super proud of myself, proud of my team and super happy right now."

Asian Tour - BNI Indonesian Masters presented by Tunas Niaga Energi

Super Sarit lifts maiden Asian Tour title with emphatic win at BNI Indonesian Masters presented by TNE. Thailand’s Sarit Suwannarut brought the Asian Tour season to a memorable conclusion today after an emphatic four-stroke victory in the US$1.5 million BNI Indonesian Masters presented by TNE.

The 24 year old fired a closing four-under-par 68, for a four-round aggregate of 20 under, at Royale Jakarta Golf Club to claim his first Asian Tour title, while Indian Anirban Lahiri, the winner here in 2014, finished in second place after carding a 66.

American Sihwan Kim wrapped up the Asian Tour Order of Merit (OOM) title after finishing in a tie for 28th, while Scott Vincent from Zimbabwe secured the International Series OOM, by finishing in equal 10th position.

The weather, which had caused numerous delays since Thursday, had a final say today when lightning stopped play at 1.09pm with Sarit having two holes left to play and with a comfortable five-shot lead. Play resumed at 2.30pm with the rising Thai star able to par his way home.

“I think I almost cried coming down the 18th,” said Sarit.

“I just can’t put into words how I feel. I am just happy. I didn’t feel the pressure that much, I was just enjoying my game. I have just enjoyed the whole week.

“I worked with my coach last week and we discovered something with the set up. I wasn’t hitting it good for the Pro Am and the first round but we looked at the video and decided to squat more and get my chin up a little bit, just small things that made a really big impact.”

Japan Golf Tour -Casio World Open Golf Tournament

Tanihara surprises himself with season-ending victory. American Chan Kim narrowly missed out final-hole birdie to force a playoff as Hideto Tanihara surprised himself by overturning a four-shot deficit to end his 12-month winless run on JGTO with a successful defence of his Golf Nippon Series JT Cup on Sunday.

Tanihara, 44, carded five birdies to close with a five-under-par 65 at the Tokyo Yomiuri Country Club for a winning total of 12-under-par 268 which was good enough for him to hold off Kim, Hiroshi Iwata and Daijiro Izumida for a one-shot victory.

Kim, the 2020 winner, birdied the 17th hole to get within a shot of Tanihara and was standing over the fifth birdie putt from about eight feet on the challenging par-three 18th with a chance to tie.

However, the 32-year-old failed to convert the clutch putt and settled for a nevertheless impressive bogey-free 65 to finish runner-up for the second time this season.

"It's the famous 18th green right? It's a very, very tough putt," said Kim, who fell just short of making it a back-to-back victory following last week's triumph at the Casio World Open.

Tanihara was left pinching himself after coming from four shots back to become the first player to retain the title since Hiroyuki Fujita accomplished the feat in 2012.

"I didn't expect to win, so I'm really happy," said Tanihara after clinching his 17th Tour title.

PGA Tour Latinoamerica - 116 VISA Argentina Open presentado por Macro

Fischer and his clan will need the little blue U.S. government-issued books because he won the 116th playing of the Visa Argentine Open presented by Macro. One of the perks that comes with winning the world’s seventh-oldest national open is a playing spot in the world’s oldest golf tournament—played overseas. Fischer edged Sweden’s Linus Lilliedahl Sunday at Nordelta Golf Club Sunday afternoon on a sunny, hot day that replicated the kind of golf both Fischer and Lilliedahl staged on the final day.

“The fact it gives me a chance to play in The Open Championship, which is the oldest tournament in the world, is so cool. I’m just over the moon right now,” Fischer said after his triumph in his PGA TOUR Latinoamérica debut.  “That was one of the main priorities for me coming down here, the exemption into The Open.”

He earned it with a sublime four-day performance that took place while he battled a virus that kept him fatigued, congested and with a hoarse voice. He was still feeling side effects from the illness, but Sunday, fortunately, was the best he felt all week—and it showed as he capitalized on his three-shot, 54-hole lead then held off Lilliedahl by shooting a Sunday 68. Zacks Win moved him to his best position in the World Golf Rankings ranked 408th.

“I’ve never played golf on the ground like that. That’s one of my favorite ways to play, to hit the ball low and flat with a lot of driving shots. To be creative like that is going to be a lot of fun,” Fischer said, picturing himself at Royal Liverpool. “The weather could be miserable, it could be great. You never know. I’ve got a lot of time to get my game ready, which is really cool, too.”
