PGA Tour - THE PLAYERS Championship

Rory McIlroy triumphed over J.J. Spaun in a captivating playoff at THE PLAYERS Championship, securing his second victory at TPC Sawgrass. The world No. 2 defeated Spaun, former world no 57 now ranked 25th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Both players finished regulation at 12-under 276, leading to a Monday morning playoff after a lengthy rain delay. McIlroy's birdie on the first playoff hole, the par-5 16th, gave him an early lead. Spaun’s hopes were dashed on the iconic par-3 17th, where his tee shot found the water, resulting in a triple bogey. Despite a bogey on the 18th, McIlroy secured the win.

The victory marks McIlroy's second win of the season, a career first before the Masters, following his win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. This win also delivered him the $4.5 million prize from the $25 million purse, the largest in golf. Scottie Scheffler, aiming for a three-peat, finished out of contention, continuing a slow start to his 2025 season.
